The problem with Heathrow is it has outgrown its location and is more costly to expand.

With the benefits of decades of hindsight (and also the availability of HS2) it turns out that 1960's era Roskill commission was right all along (new build airport in Bucks/Warks area).

A new build airport proximate to HS2 and M40 to be an international passenger and freight airport for England, not just London.

All the simplicity of space and Greenfield construction, just once, with the byproduct of releasing brownfield land for housing in London, Birmingham and elsewhere through airport rationalisation, and not consuming more green space near existing airports. Gives HS2 a real purpose.

But that's the option that is never discussed, politically too hard.
